A Basking Snake Poem

Erasure Poem 17, acrylic, gel pen & biro on paper, © N Nazir 2021

A 30 metre snake
was disguised in a stream
as a string of lights
a living sculpture.

  1. I adore this, Sunra. I think it shows the beauty in animals and nature itself and how it can be picturesque. I also love to think of the snake as deceptive too, how one can be fooled by its appearance here. That’s what this poem brings out to me, the beauty and devastation of life and how appearances can be deceiving or even deadly. Just how I interpreted this piece. 🙂 It’s very beautiful, intriguing, and I love the art.

    1. Ah thanks Lucy! I’m always doodling like this. I couldn’t manage a soul-baring poem today. I have been writing them but sometimes they feel too personal to share. Or I have to wait until it’s right to.

I also love animals especially the misunderstood ones. You’re right about appearances being deceiving. Danger is the other side of beauty. Though snakes are very sensitive and curious creatures, they just look scary 😊

      Thank you ❤️

    1. Thank you, Colleen! I’m glad! I hope that was fun to do 😀

I only noticed the tiny mistake in it after I’d already posted it however – I should have removed the ‘s’ from the word string. But never mind!

  2. It is such a spectacle to see a ‘sculpture’ immersed in water but beautifully lighted up. The image is perfect Sunra, despite your reservations!. Apologies for not responding to your earlier comments on Hank’s postings. Will make it a point to reciprocate forthwith. Thank you!

  3. This made me think of that other starry night Van Gogh painting–the one of a city at night along a river, where not just the stars but the lights of the town are reflected in the water just exactly like a basking snake. A delightful, neat and clever poem, and a pleasure to read.

    1. Oh no, Filipa! Really? They can be freaky, I guess. Most just like to be left alone. And because they’re camouflaged and someone accidentally disturbs them they rise to attack. So it seems they’re aggressive when they’re actually defending themselves. Depends on the snake, they’re all different. How about Ka in the Jungle Book? 😊 Thank you, my lovely. You are generous and kind ❤️☀️
