You saunter in.
I’m alone.
Eyes.
I look away
first
because
I always do.
Besides
I’m writing.
You don’t know
I know you
but I do
yet
you feel
like you
know me
from somewhere,
that’s because
you do.
Something
is flickering
in the night.
Old flames
are wont to
re-ignite.

*This song has been an earworm for days now. I hereby pass it on to you. Enjoy ❤
*In case an old flame happens to be reading this, I just want to confirm that it’s fiction.
That is a well done poem with all that tension. Excellent use of short sentences, like in the first stanza; 3,2,1. “Eyes.”

Hihih! Nooo, why is it fiction? 😉 I thought it was spring at work. In any case, I felt it from your poem.

Ha ha! Oh, I don’t know, Manja, maybe it is. I was being provocative. There will be no old flames reading this! 😂 They would now be charcoal and I’ll have used them for sketching.

A lot said, an entire lifetime perhaps, in so few words. As someone once remarked, the past is always with us, and it can cause a few fires–of unknown origin of course–when we rake the coals. I love short forms, and you’ve made this one fly.

Wow Joy, thank you. Coming from someone whose poetry so often blows me away, I am delighted you think that 💕

Nice poem, Sunra. If this were written for/about me I would be honored and would probably second guess my decisions that led to me becoming an old flame.

Oh what a lovely thing to say, Michael. You are sweet. I daresay most people have no idea they’ve had poems written about them! 😂

I like that last stanza about old flames potentially reigniting and also your disclaimer at the end that this is fiction.

Great use of short lines – it really slows the reader down, making us linger on the words, the rhymes, etc. Really enjoyed this Sunra.
