You Were Always Animal-Human #NaPoWriMo

It’s no coincidence
that God is dog backwards.
Smell, your superpower.
This way you know everything.

I remember how
you’d slink around
silent as hushed skirts,
not like the others,
keeping the ghosts away
with your all-knowing.

The lexicon of your love
was the way you’d lean against me
brief, your lean warmth
here now then gone.

Built for racing.
You never did.

How you’d howl at the door
whenever he left.  Your master
has a new companion now.

We remember you.
You’re still loved.

NaPoWriMo prompt: This is a fun one – it’s a prompt developed by the comic artist Lynda Barry, and it asks you to think about dogs you have known, seen, or heard about, and then use them as a springboard into wherever they take you.
